About this project: I am no Chaucer or Homer (in the Greek poet sense), but through the 2023 season, I will be writing a poem about each Mets game in an epic poem style. Obviously, I hope this will not be another tragedy! The poem will be in the left column, and the translation will be on the right.
Into the City of Angels – Could be, should be a showdown.
Two of the top two teams from a year ago,
Both have lost a bit of luster, look for respect’s crown.
Through five, leads change as they go blow for blow.
Bottom six, La Bums take a lead,
But the Amazins punch back and won’t let go.
Tres singles to start the seventh, can the rally succeed?
A balk, a ground out, a single – Okay!
Bullpen shuts them down and it is a win indeed.
The Mets go to Los Angeles as the two teams with the best record in the NL (Mets and Braves finished with the same record) face each other for the first time this season. The Dodgers sit around .500 while the Mets look for consistency. Both teams are looking for respect.
The lead changed five times early as the teams went back and forth with the Dodgers going ahead by one in the sixth, but the Mets will cause a sixth and final lead change.
In the top of the seventh, the Mets got the first three men on base via singles and scored three runs on a balk, a groundout and a single as the bullpen stopped the Dodgers scoring. The Mets win.
