About this project: I am no Chaucer or Homer (in the Greek poet sense), but through the 2023 season, I will be writing a poem about each Mets game in an epic poem style. Obviously, I hope this will not be another tragedy! The poem will be in the left column, and the translation will be on the right.
Joy to the Spring’s restoration; Joy too for Nimmo’s return!
Celebrate a new season’s dawn and the old nomad on the mound.
Happiness across the Faithful’s land as Cy Young we once again burn!
Max the Mad cruises early; Fish stand confound,
Through five looks like three will hold,
Alas, though, he falters. Agast! as the Fish bring the tie around.
The Amazins’, though, have fight and bats that are bold,
As they rally round, gut the Fish with two more!
Even without their triumphant trumpet, the bullpen doesn’t fold!.
It is Opening Day, the baseball fan’s official first day of Spring. The Mets resigned Brandon Nimmo this offseason, and he had three RBI to lead the Mets on offense. Max Scherzer (who has played for five teams in his career, started for the Mets. The Mets got three runs off the defending NL Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcantara.
Scherzer went through the first five innings without giving up a run and the Marlins had a tough time getting hits. It looked like Scherzer would cruise through until the Marlins tied the game off him in the sixth.
However, the Mets rallied right back, scoring twice in the seventh and the bullpen held on to the game, despite losing our star closer, Edwin Diez, to an injury.
