About this project: I am no Chaucer or Homer (in the Greek poet sense), but through the 2023 season, I will be writing a poem about each Mets game in an epic poem style. Obviously, I hope this will not be another tragedy! The poem will be in the left column, and the translation will be on the right.
The break of 36 festers in the heart,
As the surprise Pods return to the scene of the crime,
And a struggling Max the Mad is out for the start.
The sting of last year’s quest needs more time,
Reminders of failures fill this Scribes gut,
Ponder what the hell happened, no reason, no rhyme.
But Max the Mad storms up from his rut,
Gives up but a single hit in five, K’s six,
And the bats and bullpen slam the door shut.
It is difficult to see the San Diego Padres returning to CitiField after they upset the Mets in the first round of the 2022 playoffs…The heart break still feels strong. Max Scherzer is struggling, which creates concern.
It was a loss that still feels fresh…still feels like a punch to the gut. The end to last season just doesn’t make sense.
However, Scherzer throws his best game of the season and the offense and bullpen gets the job done.
