About this project: I am no Chaucer or Homer (in the Greek poet sense), but through the 2023 season, I will be writing a poem about each Mets game in an epic poem style. Obviously, I hope this will not be another tragedy! The poem will be in the left column, and the translation will be on the right.
Ninth-inning failures, first from pen, then bats.
Top ninth, one run down turned to three,
Perhaps with Diaz the runs stay sat.
But it’s hard to blame the pen when the heart is out for tea,
Slow offense wastes chance after chance after chance,
And we are forced to be patient, forced to wait and see.
Our prized rookie prospect, finally fully in the dance,
Has two late-inning redemption tries,
But the Amazins get nothing from his empty, impatient lance.
The Mets pen can’t hold down the Padres in the ninth as they score two and extend their lead to three runs. The game may have had a different result if Edwin Diaz was healthy. The Mets then blow a rally in the bottom of the ninth.
However, it is the offense who is to blame as they failed to bring in runs despite getting men on base. There is a fear that this could be a problem all season.
Francisco Alvarez had two key chances to drive in runs, but he seemed over excited at the plate and could not get the job done.
